Nasturtium
Orange, red or yellow: nasturtiums come in warm colours that evoke their native South America and their family, Tropaeolaceae.
See them
Their flowers herald the autumn in Claude Monet’s gardens. They create a stunning sight when the Lobb nasturtiums start climbing along the central path, completely restyling the garden’s main view.
Monet paid homage to them as cut flowers in two paintings: ‘Nasturtiums in a Blue Vase’ and ‘Vase of Nasturtiums’.
Grow them
Sow groups of five seeds in pots in a greenhouse in early April, then harden them off in a greenhouse box and plant them in the garden after the risk of frost has passed, around 15 May. They grow quickly and gradually take over the central path during summer.
